Lord Mayor of Cork welcomes RCSI President and CEO
The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Deirdre Clune received Cork Men Professor Gerald O’Sullivan, newly elected President of RCSI and RCSI Chief Executive Mr Michael Horgan at City Hall today.
The recent election of Cork cancer specialist Professor O’Sullivan as RCSI President and the visit of Mr Horgan, CEO of the College, highlight the strong link that exists between RCSI and the city.
A renowned surgeon and researcher, Professor O’Sullivan graduated from the National University of Ireland, Cork (NUIC) in 1969 where he is currently Professor of Surgery. He is a consultant surgeon at the Mercy Hospital University College Cork and Director of the Cork Cancer Research Centre. The new RCSI President is also the Chairman of the Clinical and Molecular Immunology Research Group at NUIC. Professor O’Sullivan has authored and co-authored over 120 research papers.
Mr Michael Horgan has led a distinguished career with RCSI since joining the College in 1976. He has greatly contributed to the international success of RCSI as a world-renowned medical training, educational and research centre. He is a Governor of the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, a Board member of Beaumont Hospital and also serves as Director of the Penang Medical College in Malaysia and the RCSI Medical University of Bahrain.
Commenting on the reception at the City Hall, Professor Gerald O’Sullivan said, “As fellow Cork men, we are extremely honoured to be invited to the City Hall and meet with the Lord Mayor. We are also delighted to be able to further enhance the existing strong ties RCSI has with the county, including our teaching hospitals, staff and students. This visit marks an exciting beginning to my new role as President.”
