Professor Frank Keane, Vice-President of RCSI dedicated the Harold Browne Lecture Theatre in the Department of Anatomy at a special ceremony today.

Professor Keane described Mr Harold Browne’s immense contribution to the teaching of clinical anatomy in the College. 

Born in Dublin and brought up in Longford, Mr Browne graduated with honours from UCD and, after a fellowship in the Mayo Clinic, was awarded the MS degree by the University of Minnesota and the MCh by the NUI.

On returning from America, he began teaching anatomy in RCSI in 1953. He was consultant surgeon in the Richmond Hospital for 32 years and President of the Medical Council from 1989-1994. A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1961, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of RCSI in 1976 and the College Medal in 2003.

Since retiring from the Richmond Hospital in 1987, Mr Browne has been a surgeon prosector in RCSI’s Department of Anatomy. He brings his clinical expertise and surgical skills to the Anatomy Room and guides students through a region from surface anatomy via three-dimensional dissection to radiological images. He teaches with enthusiasm, wit and wisdom and he inspires medical students, trainee surgeons and his academic colleagues alike. 

Professor Clive Lee, head of the Department of Anatomy said that all in the Department of Anatomy and Division of Biology are delighted that the College has chosen to honour Mr Browne in this way.
