Professor Alan Johnson was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of RCSI on 14 June. More ...

He was presented with the College's most prestigious award at the summer Council Dinner held on Thursday, 14 June.

Professor Johnson received the honour in recognition of the substantial contribution he has made to the College, in particular the medical school, and to medical education in Ireland. He began his career at RCSI as a Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry in 1975. He became a Senior Lecturer in 1979, Associate Professor in 1988 and a full Professor in 1992.

Throughout the years he has held a number of positions of distinction in the College including Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, Vice-Dean, Academic Director of Admissions and RCSI representative to the HRB and the Medical Council. He is now the Director of the College’s Graduate Entry Programme and will see the first Irish graduates entering the programme this September.

His main research interest was in cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism in diabetes and cardiovascular disease. He is a leading academic in the College with more than 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals and more than 200 contributions to professional society and scientific meetings

Delivering the citation, Council member Joseph Duignan said: “Professor Johnson is a man for all seasons and a loyal servant of RCSI. He is an outstanding teacher, respected and admired by students from Australia to Vancouver and many parts in between. He is still regarded with great affection by his past students. It gives me great pleasure to ask the President of the College to admit Professor Johnson as an Honorary Fellow.”
