The first joint student and Faculty International Careers Evening, hosted by the Faculty Executive, Biological Society and the Surgical Society was held in the College last evening, 1 November.

The evening, chaired by Dr Alice McGarvey, Vice Dean for Student Affairs aimed to provide insights and information to RCSI students about postgraduate and work opportunities in Ireland, the UK, the US, Australia, the Middle East and the Far East.

The six speakers, including graduates of RCSI, provided a presentation on their region and highlighted the best approach to preparing and applying for posts in the respective countries. Prof. Cathal Kelly, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, RCSI, spoke about opportunities for RCSI graduates in Ireland and said: “Good career development is an important element of the learning and teaching experience at the College, and we want our students to know what they can do to prepare for life after study." 

The other speakers included:

• Dr Gerry Meachery, a graduate of RCSI and Consultant Respiratory Physician at Sunderland Royal Hospital, a teaching hospital of Newcastle University who spoke about the UK 
• Dr Ross Morgan, Consultant Respiratory Physician formerly with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre who spoke of his time in the US
• Dr Sinead Harte, Consultant in PICU and Anesthesia who spoke about working life in Australia
• Prof. Amir Khir, Professor of Medicine and Dean of Penang Medical College who offered his perspective on life in the Far East
• Dr Ali Aldei, a graduate of RCSI and SHO in AL-Amiri Hospital in Kuwait who talked about the Middle East

The evening was very successful with a large attendance and in the O’Flanagan Theatre. The presentations were followed by a lively Q&A session. Dr McGarvey said: “Innovative events such as this one jointly organised with participation from both students and faculty will be part of our future plans.”
