Students get a taste for medicine at RCSI Open Day

Hundreds of students from second-level schools around the country got a flavour for life as a medical, pharmacy and physiotherapy student at RCSI’s annual Open Day today.

During the day-long event, Leaving Certificate and A-Level students got the chance to chat to staff, graduates and students so they could get an idea of what it is like to study medicine, pharmacy and physiotherapy. A series of informative talks were held on the range of courses available at RCSI and how to apply to RCSI through the CAO system and the new Health Professional Admissions Test (HPAT) that is being introduced as part of the selection process for EU student applying for medicine in 2009. An exhibition was hosted by various faculties and staff, who were on hand to answer any questions.

Philip Curtis, Head of Admissions at RCSI, said: “The annual Open Day is probably the best opportunity to get a sense of life at RCSI and the academic programmes it has to offer. The day comprises informative talks by our staff, students and graduates, who are there to facilitate those students who have an interest in pursuing careers in the healthcare area.” 

Students also learned more about life in RCSI and what it has to offer from the wide choice of clubs and societies available, to accommodation, library and sports facilities. An open question and answer session was held for any questions that prospective students about studying at RCSI.

Other highlights of the day included talks from current students of each of the three courses, who gave their perspectives on studying at RCSI. Students also heard about the experiences of junior doctors, who have graduated from RCSI.
