RCSI is delighted to announce the appointments of two senior lecturers in one of its major teaching hospitals, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

Dr Conor Egleston will take up the position of Senior Lecturer in Surgery, while Dr Doiminic Ó Brannagáin will take up the position of Senior Lecturer in Medicine.

Dr Ó Brannagáin is a graduate of the University College Dublin (UCD). He interned in the old Adelaide and Meath hospitals, completed his general professional training in the former North Eastern Health Board, followed by Higher Professional Training in Palliative Medicine in Our Lady’s Hospice, St Vincent’s Hospital, St James’ Hospital, St Francis Hospice/Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. He was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in 2006.

He was appointed Consultant in Palliative Medicine in 2002 to the former NEHB based in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. As Clinical Director for Regional Specialist Palliative Care Services he has worked to develop an integrated model of care for people of all ages and diagnoses with life limiting illnesses in all care domains. In 2006 he was awarded a National Public Service Excellence Award for his work on care for the terminally ill in acute hospitals. This work has been incorporated into the National Hospice friendly Hospitals Programme by the Irish Hospice Foundation and the Health Services Executive (HSE).

Since graduation Dr Ó Brannagáin has shown a commitment to medical education at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. He has contributed to the early patient contact programme of RCSI and recently (in his role as Lead Clinician in Medicine) facilitated the senior cycle II programme in medicine at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. His research interests/publications are in competency frameworks for advanced practice, palliative needs in non-malignant disease, end of life care in institutional settings and end of life care in neurodegenerative diseases.

Dr Ó Brannagáin holds a number of positions at national level including: Specialist Training Committee of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, Chair of the Irish Association of Palliative Care, National Council on Specialist Palliative Care and the National Steering Committee for the Hospice friendly Hospitals programme.

Dr Conor Egleston is a graduate of UCD and interned in the Mater and Sligo General hospitals. In 1992, he became a Fellow of RCSI and undertook his higher specialist training in East Anglia. In 1997, Dr. Egleston was appointed Consultant in Emergency Medicine in the Southhampton University Hospitals NHS trust, one of the largest UK university teaching hospitals. During this period, he led in the areas of critical incident monitoring, non-consultant doctor education, major incident planning and primary care liaison.

In 2000, Dr Egleston returned to Drogheda, where he took up the position of Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. Within this role, he piloted critical incident monitoring in the Department, gained from his experience in the UK. In addition to his role as a clinician in the emergency department, Dr Egleston is also advisor to the ambulance service in the region as well as a member of the Medical Advisory Group of the pre-hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC).

He also holds a number of other positions including member of the RCSI ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) committee, having been an ATLS instructor since 1994 and teaching on MRCS courses since 2002; member of the RCSI Trauma committee and Clinical Network Director of the Emergency Care Clinical Network which is undertaking the reform of emergency care in the HSE North East region. In addition, he also directed the first cross-border MIMMS course in 1998.
