RCSI and RCSI Bahrain wish Dr Faisal Al Mousawi every success as he takes up his new position as President of RCSI Bahrain this week.

Dr Al Mousawi previously held the position of chairman of the RCSI Bahrain Board of Governors. He was appointed President of RCSI Bahrain in July of this year following the announcement of the retirement of Professor Kevin O’Malley, its Foundation President.

As a surgeon and Fellow of RCSI, Dr Al Mousawi has played a crucial part in developing the close relationship between the Kingdom of Bahrain and RCSI for over a quarter of a century particularly in the areas of medical education and training. This culminated in the establishment of the Medical University of Bahrain in 2004 to provide healthcare education and training to world class standards for students from Bahrain, the Gulf region and beyond. 

Michael Horgan, Chief Executive of RCSI, said: “We wish Faisal every success in his new role. In his position of Chairman of the Board of Governors, Faisal has already made an outstanding contribution to RCSI Bahrain and I am confident he will bring further successes and achievements in the future.”

Dr Al Mousawi commented: “RCSI Bahrain stands as a model for the regions healthcare sector through the education and training of tomorrow’s medical professionals and by helping to meet the healthcare demands of the Kingdom by producing an increased number of locally trained medical workers. I am delighted to begin the academic year as President and look forward to working closely with both the staff and students.”

Earlier this year the RCSI Council approved the appointment of Dr Al Mousawi. In his new position, Dr Al Mousawi will be responsible for providing leadership to the University, informing strategy and fostering communication with internal and external constituencies as well as the continued fulfilment of the University’s objectives and vision.

Professor Kevin O’Malley will continue with the University as special advisor to the President until August 2010. One of his principle responsibilities will be to set up and manage the School of Postgraduate Studies & Research and in particular to implement RCSI Bahrain’s research strategy.
