Active Lifestyles – Helpful or Harmful? will be the focus of a free RCSI MyHealth public lecture in RCSI in Ireland on Wednesday, 27 April. Medical and health research experts will share the benefits of staying active and achieving the right level of balance to stay healthy and injury free. The lecture will be held from 18.30-20.30 at RCSI, 123 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2.

There is no denying the myriad of benefits of leading an active lifestyle including physical wellness, reduction in the risk of heart disease, weight and stress management and increased energy levels, to name just a few. However, with exercise also comes the risk of injury and burn out both from a physical and mental health perspective and these topics will be explored at the lecture on the night.

Prof John M. O’Byrne, Orthopaedic Surgeon will discuss sports injuries from an orthopaedic surgeon’s perspective and Louise Keating, Specialist Chartered Physiotherapist will discuss risk factors for injury and how to stay injury free.

Peter Connolly, Occupational Therapist will discuss active lifestyles and the mental health experience. The talk will focus on our relationship with exercise and how sometimes exercise and activity is approached in unhelpful ways such as controlling, perfectionism and avoidance, which can affect the choices we make around recovery and then become part of the problem. He will also look at the challenges we face within modern day living to meet our need for renewal physically, emotionally, psychologically & spiritually.

Also as part of the evening, RCSI researchers will demonstrate the latest regenerative medicine research findings through interactive demonstrations.
