More than 100 local boys and girls from St Enda's Primary School, Whitefriar Street, Dublin 8 and Presentation Primary School, Warrenmount, Dublin 8 got active while having fun as part of the annual REACH RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland) Sports Day, on Wednesday, 13 April.

The event, hosted by RCSI's REACH (Recreation Education And Community Health) unit was great opportunity for school children aged between seven to 10 years of age, to develop their sports skills and get some exercise by taking part in a tag rugby masterclass as well as a number of other games and activities.

A number of RCSI student volunteers were there to help the children have fun, including members of the RCSI Rugby team taught the young people all about the game of rugby in a rugby skills course before they all took part in a game of tag rugby.

The REACH RCSI Sports Day aims to raise awareness and promote life-long recreation and community health. RCSI students and staff volunteer to help run the event, organised by the REACH RCSI Programme, at the College's sports grounds in Dardistown, Swords. The action packed day of events included a rugby skills course, followed by a game of tag rugby, a dancing class, a five-a-side soccer tournament and an obstacle course, along with a range of traditional sports day games including the sack race, egg and spoon races.

Maria Kelly, REACH RCSI Manager, said, "Our annual Sports Day is always a fantastic opportunity for children from two schools situated in our local community to get outside, get some fresh air and develop their sports skills, which is a valuable way to encourage lifelong health and well-being. This is the first year we have rugby skills workshop and everyone seemed to enjoy the game. Also by spending a day with our RCSI student volunteers, many of whom participate in established College sports teams, it will encourage young people in our community to develop a greater interest in sport and health, which is one of the main objectives of the REACH programme."

The REACH RCSI Programme is a Community Outreach and Access programme at RCSI. The initiative is aimed at encouraging and facilitating third level participation and enhancing life chances for those traditionally underrepresented at third level, particularly those from Dublin's south inner city.
