Students get introduced to life at RCSI with action-packed Freshers' Week
Last week, saw the epic conclusion of RCSI Freshers' Week, which is hosted annually by the RCSI Student Union. After the events of Orientation Week these events provide our newest students with the opportunity to let their hair down. The SU organised the famous Grafton Mile after the President's Reception on Monday, 5 September.
The following day saw another great evening with a games night and yogism by the RCSI Islamic Society (ISOC) this was a good opportunity to meet, mingle and make new friends. Also that night, CIMSA hosted their Fire and Ice event in Everleigh Garden.
On Wednesday all the Clubs and Societies came out in force for the Clubs and Societies Sign-up Day, which is their opportunity to encourage freshers and other students to get involved in their events and activities throughout the year. As always the Exam Hall was buzzing and the clubs and societies put on a great show, introducing the new cohort of students to RCSI's vibrant student life.
RCSI's club and society committee's set out to encourage new students to get involved in their respective clubs/societies. Enticing them with music, colours and most importantly food. Clubs and Societies are student run and have always been a vital part of the student experience at RCSI.
With 36 RCSI Clubs, which provide a wide variety of opportunities to train, get involved, play and compete in sport, no matter what your passion, ability or level. RCSI boasts some 35 societies offering an opportunity to learn new skills, nurture old hobbies, make new friends, acquire transferable skills and, of course, have lots of fun. The 493 enthusiastic new students were frantically signing up to the Rugby Club, Soccer Club, Biological Society, Irish Society, to name but a few.
Be it academic, sporty, artistic or just fun, all aspects of student life were well and truly covered.
Thursday, 8 September, saw one of the main events of the week: the Annual (and always much anticipated) Freshers' Carnival in Dardistown. Students new and old went back to their childhoods with the carnival rides. The waltzers were spun and Dodgems bumped the night away, for some this was the first time on rides like this and the excitement was paramount with queues to get on the rides. The night was enjoyed by over 400 students.
The RCSI Student band ‘Fit For Kings' was there for people to bop away to. Another annual favourite, the Fresher's Week Ballad Session, took place on Friday night. Students attended en masse to hear their fellow students perform for them. The finale of the week was the White Party hosted by the Caribbean-African Society in Turks Head.
Congratulations to the Student Union for putting on a fantastic Freshers' Week, one which will be remembered by all for years to come.
