RCSI hosts 2017 Advanced Trauma and Life Support Instructor Course

  • General news

From 6-7 February, 15 clinicians successfully completed the 2017 Advanced Trauma and Life Support (ATLS) Instructor Course at RCSI in Dublin and are now qualified as ATLS instructors.

ATLS courses were pioneered in the US by the American College of Surgeons to teach established standards of trauma care and practical life-saving skills.

The courses are designed, not only for those who are responsible for treating injured patients in emergency and surgical departments, but also for clinicians who do not treat victims of injury on a regular basis but who may be called to do so.

The programme was directed by Dr Geraldine McMahon, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at St James's Hospital and Professor Ciaran O'Boyle, Director of the RCSI Institute of Leadership, who is the National Educator for ATLS in Ireland.

Faculty were drawn from consultant clinical staff at Sligo Regional Hospital, St Vincent's University Hospital, Beaumont Hospital, ANNCM, St James's Hospital, St Bricin's Military Hospital, Our Lady of Lourdes' Hospital, Drogheda and the Mater Hospital in Dublin.
