More than 350 senior citizens visited RCSI yesterday evening for a night of entertainment, singing and dancing at the annual RCSI Ballroom of Romance.

The event, now in its seventh year, is for senior citizens living in the catchment area of the College and sees active retirement and community groups from across the south east inner city come together for a night of music, memories and dancing.

Entertainment on the night was provided by the hugely-popular Ronan Collins and the Sugar Cubes showband whose music brought guests back to the golden era of the Irish Showband phenomenon.

The evening opened with a set from the extremely talented Whitefriar Strings Project, a local youth orchestra, under the direction of Kitty Dalligan. First established in 2011 Whitefriar Strings provides access to free professional string tuition to local Whitefriar Street children between six and 12 years of age attending St Enda’s primary school in Dublin 8.

This annual event is organised by Maria Kelly, REACH (Recreation, Education and Community Health) RCSI Programme Manager, in partnership with Dublin City Council South East Area Community Development team.

REACH RCSI works in partnership with primary and post primary schools, youth and community groups together with the local community on the design and delivery of educational initiatives including grinds clubs, science workshops, sports and health programmes and an education information service.
