Mr Eamon Mackle has been elected to the RCSI Council to fill the vacancy left by the passing of esteemed Fellow and dearly missed friend, Professor W. Arthur Tanner.

Mr Mackle is a Senior Consultant Surgeon at Craigavon Area Hospital in Northern Ireland. He is an Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Surgery at Queen’s University of Belfast, the Senior Examiner in MRCS for RCSI. He was awarded his Fellowship of RCSI in 1984 and appointed as a consultant in 1992.

Speaking about his election RCSI President, Professor John Hyland, said: “Given Mr Mackle’s active involvement in the operational activities of the College over many years, including his current roles as a Member of the Executive Committee of the Court of Examiners and a MRCSI examiner, his election is warmly welcomed.”

“As a highly experienced Consultant Surgeon based in Northern Ireland, we welcome the fresh insight Mr Mackle will bring to the senior governance of the College. I look forward to working with him over the coming months.” concluded Professor Hyland.

Mr Mackle’s involvement in surgical postgraduate education and training in Ireland and the UK is extensive. He is a current member of the Executive Committee of RCSI’s Court of Examiners, senior MRCSI examiner, Vice Chair of IMRCS MCQ Paper Panel, an RCSI representative on Intercollegiate Committee Basic Surgical Exams, a past member of RCSI Postgrad Surgical Examination Operation Group (2012-14), Deputy Chair of Basic Surgical Training Committee of Northern Ireland (2004-8), and a past NUI external examiner at the Medical University Bahrain (2014-17).

Among his many leadership roles at hospital and national level, Mr Mackle has served as Associate Medical Director of SHSCT (2007-16), Clinical Director of Surgery (2006-7), Clinical Director of Cancer Services (2004-7), Member of Northern Ireland Council of BMA (1994-99), and as RCS England representative on Consultant Appointment Advisory Committees since 2002. He is also heavily active in his specialty having served as President of the Ulster Society of Gastroenterology (2012-16), President of the Ulster Medical Society (2013-14), and a Council Member of AUGIS (2000-3).

Mr Mackle will serve for the remainder of the term of the present Council, up to June 2018.
