Transition Year students experience life as doctors at RCSI
200 students will get the opportunity to experience what it is like to study medicine and work as a doctor at RCSI this week. The RCSI Transition Year MiniMed programme takes place from Monday, 26 February to Friday, 1 March at 26 York Street.
Over the five-day programme, students will participate in interactive lectures and workshops and witness real-life procedures via livestream. Students will receive clinical skills training as well as practical experience in a wide range of specialities, including human anatomy, sports medicine, surgery, paediatrics, forensic medicine and family practice.
Due to the popularity of the programme, now in its eleventh year, a number of sessions of the programme will be available for students to watch from schools around Ireland. Leading medical professionals from RCSI and Beaumont Hospital are involved in running the programme including Professor Arnie Hill, Head of RCSI School of Medicine, and Professor Fergal Malone, Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Master of the Rotunda Hospital. This year’s programme sees lectures with experts including Professor Marie Cassidy, State Pathologist, Ms Noelle Healy, Anaesthetist and Captain of the Dublin Ladies Football team, Mr Niall Hogan, Orthopaedic Surgeon, and Professor Jim Lucey, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry.
The week will begin with a series of practical workshops covering a range of topics, followed by three days of interactive lectures before the Transition Year students end the week with further practical workshops. Students will watch a real life Caesarean section live from the Rotunda Hospital and witness a laparoscopic surgery. Students will also experience simulated patients in action as well as learning practical skills including how to take blood pressure readings and suturing skills.
