To celebrate Science Week Ireland 2018, RCSI opened its doors to provide female students from St Dominic’s College in Ballyfermot with an opportunity to experience careers in biomedical research and health sciences.

The event was developed to encourage young females from areas at risk of disadvantage and social exclusion to consider careers in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine) and to give practical insights into careers as science and healthcare professionals, whether as a scientist, doctor or pharmacist.

The day-long event incorporated hands-on demonstrations and interactive activities, including laboratory demonstrations in the areas of genetics, vascular and musculoskeletal biology at RCSI research centres, and patient simulations at 26 York Street, the most advanced clinical healthcare simulation centre in Europe.

RCSI Lab Safari was developed and led by Dr Maria Morgan and Dr Annie Curtis from the Molecular and Cellular Therapeutics Department (MCT) and funded through the L’Oreal Ambassadors Fund. The initiative was an interdepartmental collaboration with support from staff across RCSI.
