RCSI launches Transatlantic Summer School
RCSI has launched a Transatlantic Summer School offering North American college students the opportunity to experience a sample of life as a graduate medical student in Ireland.
The two-week programme is aimed at students from the United States and Canada who are considering applying for the Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) degree programme at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences.
The summer school, which will take place at RCSI’s main Dublin city-centre campus and affiliated hospitals, will include academic and clinical activities including lectures and health-research workshops.
Attendees will have the opportunity to practice hands-on clinical skills at RCSI’s clinical simulation suite, which includes a mock-hospital ward and is the most advanced facility of its kind in Europe. Participants will also have the opportunity to work with doctors in simulated clinical skills workshops and interactive patient reviews. The programme also includes visits to RCSI-affiliated hospitals.
Prof. Annette Byrne, Director of the RCSI Transatlantic Summer School and Professor of Physiology, said: “The graduate entry medicine programme at RCSI is a bespoke four-year programme for graduate students. It is an accelerated programme with early clinical exposure and integrated teaching themed around weekly clinical cases.
“The Transatlantic Summer School, through interaction with RCSI-based US students and participation in the interactive programme offered on our campus, will provide attendees with a real sense of what it is like to live in Dublin and study graduate medicine here at RCSI.”
Social activities during the programme include visits to some of Ireland’s top tourist attractions including the Guinness Storehouse and Glendalough as well as a Summer School dinner.
The course fee is €1,600 and includes accommodation, selected meals and social activities. For further information and to apply, visit the RCSI Transatlantic Summer School page.
The deadline for applications is 31 March 2020.
