More than 300 medicine students from RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences Class of 2020 received their final year results via live stream today (22 April), marking the first time the historic event has been held online.

In a tradition that has been running for more than 60 years in RCSI, the results were read out to students in an online ceremony presided by Judith Gilroy, RCSI’s Associate Director for Academic Affairs. Students gathered to hear their results and to celebrate, as they embark on their new career as doctors.

Commenting on the celebration, Professor Cathal Kelly, CEO/Registrar, RCSI said: “These are truly extraordinary times for our Class of 2020 students. Although we can’t be together on campus, we wanted to mark the occasion virtually – celebrating this important milestone with family and friends all over the world.”

“This year’s School of Medicine graduates have thrived academically during an unprecedented time in history. I am extremely proud of each and every one of them as their years of hard work and dedication are come to fruition today.”

In recent weeks, RCSI brought forward final examinations for medicine students amid concerns over the spread of COVID-19. The decision was made in consultation with students to support their careers on the frontline in Ireland and in their home countries worldwide.

Results Day is the first in a series of celebrations for the Class of 2020 medical graduands’ achievements, including the School of Medicine Virtual Conferring Ceremony that takes place on 13 May.
