The free online Medical Professionalism Conference 2022, hosted by RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences, will take place from 12.30–6.30pm this Friday, 8 April 2022.

Over 800 delegates from more than 20 countries are expected to attend the various sessions and keynote addresses throughout the day.

Presented on behalf of RCSI by Professor Denis Harkin, Chair of Medical Professionalism, the theme for this year’s event is: Rebuilding Safer Services: Safer patients, Safer staff, Safer health services.

Speakers at the conference include experts from the WHO, the Mayo Clinic and McGill University as well as many other high-level national and international experts who will present keynote addresses on pertinent topics including:

• James Campbell, Director, Health Workforce Department, World Health Organisation (WHO), who will provide attendees with an overview of the ‘Impact of COVID-19 on the workforce
• Professor Yvonne Steinert, McGill University, Canada will explore the idea of professional identity formation
• Prof Colin West, Professor of Medicine, Medical Education and Biostatistics. Mayo Clinic, USA, who will address ‘Physician well-being: From burnout to thriving in modern practice’
• Dr Hilary Jones, MBE, GP, Author and trusted media doctor, London, UK, who will discuss ‘Communicating Good Health Advice’

The conference will be chaired by Professor Hannah McGee, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, RCSI and Professor Salman Yousef Guraya, Vice Dean, College of Medicine and Professor of Surgery, University of Sharjah. Other national and international speakers will host and participate in various sessions throughout the day including:

• Neil Hopper Consultant vascular surgeon, Cornwall, UK, who also happens to be an amputee and a would-be astronaut
• Prof The Lord Darzi of Denham, Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London who will discuss ‘Shifting from sick care to pre-emptive medicine;’
• Prof Bill Maher, Chief Executive Officer, Bon Secours Health System Ireland
• Professor Lord Ara Darzi, Imperial College London, UK
• Dr Suzanne Crowe, President, Medical Council of Ireland
• Professor Colin Melville, Medical Director, General Medical Council, UK
• Rachel Flynn, Director of Health Information and Standards, HIQA, Ireland
