Unwell and injured teddies gathered this weekend for the 10th annual Teddy Bear Hospital at RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The free event, which took place on 24 and 25 February, was hosted by the RCSI Paediatric Society and achieved a record attendance with 600 children bringing their teddies for a check-up.

Teddy bear doctors fixed any rips or tears and children learned how to best take care of their teddies, with the aim of alleviating childhood fears about healthcare environments and educating children about healthcare in a friendly way.

The children and their teddy bears explored 14 interactive stations, each designed to reflect real-life hospital services including first aid, phlebotomy, surgery, pharmacy, X-rays, pharmacy and a suturing station to help repair any loose stitching. At a new emergency station children learned about when to call an ambulance, what happens when they do, and the equipment they might see in the ambulance and emergency room.

The event also featured creative non-medical stations such as facepainting and arts and crafts, as well as a sensory room ensuring a well-rounded experience for all visitors. Tailored sessions for children with disabilities or chronic illnesses, who might be dealing with doctors and hospital environments more regularly, were held on Sunday. These sessions were smaller and more inclusive to ensure that children and their bears were supported.

10th anniversary

Now in its 10th year, the Teddy Bear Hospital is designed for children aged 4-10, with their parents and siblings also welcome to join. The event is run by volunteer medicine, physiotherapy and pharmacy students from RCSI, all of whom are passionate about creating a fun, educational and safe atmosphere for the children.

Áine Harris, Chairperson of the RCSI Paediatric Society, said: "Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Teddy Bear Hospital, we're thrilled to have welcomed a record number of participants this year. It's so rewarding to see the enthusiasm with which children learn about healthcare and well-being, and equally, the event serves as a reminder of the positive impact we can have as healthcare professionals in making medical environments less intimidating for children.”

The proceeds from this year’s Teddy Bear Hospital are going to two charities – Ronald McDonald House Ireland, which is situated on the grounds of Children’s Health Ireland and provides accommodation for families who have seriously ill children in hospital; and Cian’s Kennels, which makes it possible to bring family pets closer to sick children and their families.
