New book from RCSI unveils five key emotional intelligence skills for dentists
A new book exploring how emotional intelligence can transform dental practice has been launched by RCSI. Written by Dr Mary Collins, chartered psychologist and faculty member at the RCSI Centre for Positive Health Sciences, the book offers a clear framework and real-world case studies to help practitioners integrate these essential skills into their daily work.
Emotional Intelligence in Dentistry: Open Wide – The Five Critical Skills to Take Dentists from Good to Great serves as a vital resource for dental professionals – ranging from undergraduates to experienced practitioners – by demonstrating how emotional intelligence (EQ) can enhance both personal and professional success in dentistry.
With a strong evidence-based approach and drawing on real life case studies, Emotional Intelligence in Dentistry presents the five essential EQ skills that can transform the patient experience, improve professional relationships, and elevate clinical practice.
Dr Collins explained the importance of emotional intelligence for dentists: “Understanding and managing emotions is a critical yet often overlooked aspect of dentistry. Every patient interaction requires not only clinical expertise but also the ability to connect, reassure, and communicate effectively. Research has shown that dentists who develop strong emotional intelligence (EQ) skills experience greater professional success, stronger patient relationships, and improved overall well-being.”
“This book provides dentists with a clear framework and real-world case studies to help them integrate these critical skills into their daily practice,” added Dr Collins.
Professor Albert Leung, Head of the RCSI School of Dentistry, welcomed the publication of Emotional Intelligence in Dentistry: “Dentistry is not just about technical precision – it is about trust, communication, and patient care. Emotional intelligence plays a pivotal role in shaping how dentists engage with patients, colleagues, and their wider professional networks. Dr. Collins’ book offers a compelling guide to integrating these essential skills into modern dental practice.”
The launch of this book coincides with an exciting new era for dental education at RCSI. The university’s recently established School of Dentistry will welcome its first intake of students in September 2025.
The School’s innovative Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) is the first community-based dentistry programme in Ireland and is designed to equip future dentists with both the technical expertise and emotional intelligence required to deliver excellence in patient care.
