Advanced Hazmat Life Support

Summary

This course is run over three days: 

19 May 2025 Day 1  09:00-17:30
20 May 2025 Day 2  09:00-16:00
21 May 2025 Day 3 09:00-13:30

This two-and-half day face-to-face course is delivered as a series of lectures, and interactive workshops. The final day is based on multi-disciplinary outdoor simulation scenarios based on a variety of challenging settings, facilitated by our exciting and challenging venue. Course topics covered include:

  • Welcome, aims & setting the scene
  • Epidemiology and important properties of HAZMAT
  • An approach to Medical Management with HAZMAT
  • Irritant Gases
  • Ashyxiants
  • Insecticide poisoning
  • Corrosive agents
  • Hydrocarbons
  • Hydrazines and Pyrodxine
  • Hydrofluric Acid and Fluorides
  • Chemical Biological and Radiation Terrorism.

For those eligible to become a verified AHLS Provider and upon completion of an AHLS Provider course, they will receive a certificate of completion and an AHLS Provider verification card. The verification card is good for up to four years. They can renew their verification status online once every four years following the completion of a live course.

Learning outcomes

  • To develop and practice a systematic approach to hazardous materials exposure.
  • To review and establish common poisoning toxidromes and management algorithms.
  • To understand Ammonia Toxicity and management..
  • To know toxic asphyxiants and their denomination.
  • To be able to manage corrosive, fluoride and insecticide exposure.
  • To describe and recognize the effects of chemical, biological and radiation poisoning.

Suitable for: EMs or orthopaedic SHOs, registrars or 'returning to EM' refreshers.
