Summary
With the increased pressure of cross-specialty cover, general surgeons can be presented with ENT emergencies and presentation of neck lumps in their everyday practice.
This course has been designed and will be facilitated by experienced ENT consultants for general surgeons. Emphasis will be placed on the management of ENT emergencies such as epistaxis, emergency airway obstruction and the management of a post-tonsillectomy bleed.
There will also be case-based discussions on the clinical diagnosis of head and neck cancers and skills taught in aspiration biopsy neck lumps.
Learning outcomes
Understanding of and ability to use the following functions:
- More skills in airway management and intubation.
- Increased knowledge of emergency management of ENT bleeding scenarios such as epistaxis, post-tonsillectomy and post-thyroidectomy.
- Practice of an emergency cricothyroidotomy.
- More knowledge of head and neck cancer referral criteria.
In this practical course we will use a combination of synthetic and animal tissue (porcine/ovine).
