Vascular Biology and Cardiology

We use cutting-edge technologies to uncover the role blood vessel abnormalities play in the pathogenesis of many serious illnesses, including heart disease, stroke, venous thromboembolism, pregnancy complications, long COVID, diabetes and cancer.

Our impact

Analysing risk factors and the molecular biology of vascular diseases enables us to deliver personalised treatments to patients with cardiovascular complications. Our researchers are exploring new ways to prevent cancer progression and treat disorders such as haemophilia, sepsis and von Willebrand disease.

Patient-focused research

Vascular Biology and Cardiology is an interdisciplinary research field at RCSI bringing together clinicians, biologists, epidemiologists, statisticians and chemists to improve patient outcomes. In this RCSI MyHealth episode, our panel of vascular biology experts address heart and cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and heart failure.

Our expertise

James O Donnell

"We are examining the effect of abnormal clotting and disturbed immunity in Long COVID which may help develop strategies for this persistent illness which is affecting millions of people worldwide.”
