Why study Advanced Therapeutic Technologies?

Do you want to become a next-generation scientist??

Do you love biology and health sciences, are interested in technology and maths and would like to research and develop the latest medicines, treatments and health technologies? And as a highly sought graduate work in the thriving (bio)pharma industry in Ireland. If so, this is the course for you.

RCSI has reimagined university science education to develop the next generation of future scientists capable of innovating and collaborating to deliver ground-breaking therapeutic medicines and technologies to address current and future global healthcare needs. This science degree is focused on the latest scientific discoveries and goes beyond learning each step of the drug lifecycle process as it also layers in advanced therapeutics and technologies and the new discipline of precision medicine that personalises treatment for patients through genetic profiling.

Ireland: global pharma hub

Ireland’s the world’s third largest exporter of pharmaceuticals, with nine out of ten of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies having substantial operations here. You will gain a clear understanding of the pharma end-to-end ecosystem and be ideally qualified for a number of exciting roles in the ever growing (bio) pharma industry in Ireland and beyond.

Three key pillars of this science degree

  1. Gain extensive workplace relevant scientific knowledge in both traditional sciences and the latest advancements in medical therapies, treatments and technologies.
  2. Learn and Do' with significant curricular focus on hands-on practical laboratory skills and data analysis using both wet and dry lab experiments as well as NIBRT* bio pharma training.
  3. Finally, we focus on developing your power skills: communication, collaboration, project management and team work to bring all you have learnt together so you are workplace ready.

*The National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) – a global leader in biopharmaceutical manufacturing training and research.

What makes this science degree different?

  • Gain the scientific knowledge and skills to develop the latest medicines, treatments and health technologies from lab to market.
  • Take a "big data" approach to interpret genetic and genomic data to develop new medical therapies.
  • Complete an eight-month work placement and gain critical power skills to be career ready.

"With this course, I have learnt so much, from human anatomy to biostatistics. I especially love learning about drug formulation and the pharmaceutics and pharmacology lectures are so interesting, and I leave the lectures with something new."

Dara Alero Anthony, BSc Advanced Therapeutic Technologies
Ingrid Radu

"The labs where we work are fascinating and really help to further explain the content that is taught in the lectures. I never thought I’d enjoy learning how to code – I love how I was given independence within the workshops to analyse the data myself."

Ingrid Radu, BSc Advanced Therapeutic Technologies
Aisha Betro

"What I have enjoyed most is the diverse range of modules taught, from human anatomy and physiology to data analysis. This has given me the opportunity to explore many disciplines and opens doors to many opportunities in the future."
