About
Build your professional practice and expand your management skills with the BSc in Nursing Management from RCSI School of Nursing and Midwifery. You will evaluate factors that influence health, and hone your skills in planning patient-centred health promotion interventions.
With a focus on developing as a leader, you will reflect on the crucial role of nursing management for success in interdisciplinary teams, and gain insight into the impact of financing on resource allocation. This programme is delivered part-time via an active blended learning approach including self-directed learning and live online classes approximately once every week.
Further support is provided through the module lead, programme director and regular online drop-in sessions.
The award title for this course is BSc in Nursing Management.
This course is a Level 8 award on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications.

- (PO1): Demonstrate an understanding of the theory, concepts and methods pertaining to the six modules they complete on the BSc Nursing Management programme.
- (PO2): Demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of clinical leadership and management, research and evidence-based practice, patient safety and risk management, human resource management, health financial management, lifelong education and professional development, and the utilisation of this knowledge in providing patient-centred, safe and quality healthcare and management services.
- (PO3): Demonstrate the ability to use and modify advanced skills in research, evidence-based practice, leadership, management, education and professional development to efficiently provide patient-centered care and health care management in complex situations which may require collaboration with the multi/interdisciplinary teams and primary/community care settings.

Evidence Based Nursing and Midwifery (10 ECTS) |
In today’s health environment, nurses and midwives need to have the skills and ability to access, understand and utilise research evidence in their area of practice in order to provide quality safe care and to undertake change initiatives. This module aims to develop your ability to search the RCSI Library databases which includes the E-Journal portal and critically appraise the national and international literature on topics relevant to your area of practice to inform an evidence-based approach to patient care. |
Reflection on Nursing and Midwifery Values for Legal and Ethical practice (10 ECTS) |
Legal concepts and guidelines are increasingly becoming part of professional nursing and midwifery. This module aims to itroduce you to the concept of reflection and to provide a forum where you can begin or continue to develop the skills of critical reflection for professional practice. This module will also provide you with the basic knowledge and understanding of the theoretical concepts, principles and values of the ethics and law, directly applicable in the professional practice of nurses and midwives. |
Education for Professional Practice (10 ECTS) |
Education enables nurses and midwives to have a person-centered approach to professional practice, to develop themselves as reflective practitioners and to engage in evidence-based practice. In the healthcare service, nurses and midwives have the responsibility to support and guide junior colleagues and nursing, midwifery and other healthcare students in their clinical learning. This module will provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to plan continuous professional development for yourself, other nursing/midwifery colleagues, healthcare professionals and patient/client groups. |
Leadership and Management (10 ECTS) |
Nursing and midwifery services are undergoing rapid change, reconfiguration and development in all service sectors. Nurse/midwife managers need the competencies not only to deliver today’s services but also to lead the evolution of services in this challenging environment. The future for the nurse/midwife manager is to embody a strategy for education and development at all levels producing caring, positive nurse/midwife managers. This module will provide you with the knowledge necessary to develop management and leadership skills and to do so in such a way as to encourage growth and development of the individual learner. |
Human Resource and Financial Management (10 ECTS) |
It is important for nursing and midwifery managers to have the skills and knowledge to develop and adopt effective human resources strategies that balance organisational goals with the financial considerations of an organisation. This module aims to provide an overview of the contemporary issues in human resource management and employee relations for effective people management in healthcare services. This module also aims to provide an overview of the Irish health services and to develop an understanding and appreciation of finance and financial issues in the context of the current healthcare system. |
Patient Safety, Quality Improvement and Risk Management (10 ECTS) |
The HSE’s vision for patient safety is that: “All patients using our health and social care services will consistently receive the safest care possible”. The Quality Improvement Division maintains that: “Improving the quality of care and practice is a valued responsibility of staff within the Irish health service”. This module aims to provide you with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of patient safety, quality and risk management and practice development concepts and their application to healthcare from a nursing and midwifery perspective, with focus on the HSE’s strategic approach to improving quality. |
Following the completion of the BSc in Nursing Management, several progression options are available for further career and educational development depending on your career goals.
The RCSI School of Nursing and Midwifery offers a large suite of postgraduate certificate programmes, postgraduate diploma programmes and MSc programmes. Further information can be found here.
This programme will begin in September each year.
This programme is assessed through a range of assessment modalities, including essays, poster presentations, oral presentations and online quizzes.
All programmes offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery are accredited by the RCSI, the National University of Ireland and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Recognition by bodies in other jurisdictions must be determined by individual applicants.
Admissions
All applicants must be a registered nurse or midwife on the active register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or the relevant regulatory body in their country of practice before commencing a module of study.
English language requirements for all programmes are published on the RCSI website.
Learning occurs in many contexts, including work, involvement in social and community activities, and learning through life experience generally. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) does not give credit for experience as such; rather, it considers learning that was acquired as a result of the experience.
RPL may be used to gain admission to programmes where an applicant may not have obtained the standard entry requirements. This is considered on a case-by-case basis. Exemptions from programme modules that duplicate learning already demonstrably acquired through prior learning may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants who have completed undergraduate/postgraduate full-time studies in the medium of the English language (three or more years cumulatively), and students registered with the NMBI, are exempt from these requirements.
Annual fee: €6,530
Please note:
- Your fee includes the €45 NUI fee.
- There is an additional application fee of €50 which is non-refundable.
- Fees are subject to review annually.
- Fees can be paid by bank transfer. Full details on fee payment will be emailed to you shortly before the commencement of your programme.
- You can pay your fees in three instalments - one payment of 40% is due before you commence the programme, while the remaining payments can be paid in two 30% instalments in November and February of your year of study.
