About

This module, which aims to address the training needs of health professionals working in musculoskeletal medicine, focuses on the development of knowledge, advanced reasoning and practical skills pertaining to the use of joint and soft tissue injections in the management of upper- and lower-limb musculoskeletal conditions.

This module is ideally suited to doctors working in orthopaedic, rheumatology, sports medicine and general practice settings, as well as allied health professionals such as physiotherapists and nurses working in advanced practice/musculoskeletal triage roles, alongside consultants, in public or private rheumatology or orthopaedic hospital clinics.

The module is delivered by senior faculty of the RCSI Schools of Physiotherapy, Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, and Medicine, as well as medical and physiotherapy clinicians who use injection therapy in their day-to-day practice.

Course information

On completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning in relation to the rationale for and evaluation of injection therapy in the management of musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the evidence base for the use of injection therapy as a singular or adjunctive therapy.
  • Demonstrate safe, effective and competent practice in the technical application of injection therapy.
  • Understand the ethical, legal, health and safety issues regarding the use of injection therapy.

This module comprises four onsite days over two months in RCSI, along with some additional online materials (approximately two hours).

Confirmed dates for 2025 are:

  • Thursday and Friday 10 and 11 April 2025.
  • Thursday and Friday 1 and 2 May 2025.

All days run from 9.30am to 5pm.

  • 2,500 word written assignment related to musculoskeletal injection therapy (40%).
  • Practice placement portfolio (2,000 words) demonstrating evidence of clinical reasoning related to use of injection therapy (60%).

This must also include a record sheet which demonstrates evidence of 10 successfully completed injections supervised by mentor (record sheet not graded).

Recognition by Ministries and bodies in other jurisdictions must be determined by the individual applicants.

Admissions

This module is ideally suited to doctors working in orthopaedic, rheumatology, sports medicine and general practice settings, as well as allied health professionals, such as physiotherapists and nurses, working in advanced practice/musculoskeletal triage roles, alongside consultants, in public or private rheumatology or orthopaedic hospital clinics.

You must demonstrate proof of registration with their registration/professional bodies, provide evidence of currently appropriate indemnity insurance and provide written evidence of an agreement with a mentor/supervisor for the learning in–practice components of the course.

You will be required to show evidence of the following:

  • Current and appropriate indemnity insurance.
  • Professional registration with an appropriate medical, physiotherapy or nursing governing /professional body such as the Irish Medical Council, CORU, or the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.

If you do not have an undergraduate degree at level 7 or above you may still be eligible to apply through recognition of prior learning (RPL). RPL is the assessment of knowledge, skills and competence previously acquired.

Learning occurs in many contexts which include work, involvement in social and community activities, or learning through life experience generally. RPL does not give credit for experience as such; rather it considers the learning that was acquired as a result of the experience.

RPL may be used to gain: Admission to courses/programmes where a person may not have obtained the standard entry requirements.

Exemptions from course modules which duplicate the learning outcomes an individual has already demonstrably acquired through prior learning.

If English is not your first language, you will also need to supply a copy of an academic IELTS examination or equivalent, with an overall score of at least 6.5 and no individual band below 6.5.

  • Total fee: €1,350 (+ €50 non-refundable application fee).
