Advanced Specialist Training (ASTEM)

Training pathway

Advanced trainees, known as specialist registrars (SpRs), rotate through a minimum of three accredited training emergency departments during the four-year ASTEM programme. This includes a mandatory six months in a dedicated paediatric emergency department.

Appraisal

During ASTEM, you will undergo regular formal appraisal and you will be required to pass the final Fellowship Exam of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM) to successfully complete your ASTEM training.

If successful, the Irish Committee for Emergency Medicine Training (ICEMT) will make a recommendation to the Irish Surgical Postgraduate Training Committee (ISPTC) that a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCCT) be issued.
