Analysis of students who graduated from the RCSI Medical University of Bahrain medicine programme during the last six years has identified that the Bahrain Tawjihiya school qualification is a good predictor of the overall degree result.

Dr Declan Gaynor, Senior Lecturer in Chemistry and Academic Director of Admissions at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, stated: “Our analysis shows that students who enter our medicine programme with the Bahrain Tawjihiya qualification are more likely to achieve honours in the degree when they have higher Bahrain Tawjihiya GPA. The reliability of the qualification to predict academic performance is critical to the university admitting Tawjihiya students who are best suited to our rigorous programmes.”

The report, which was presented to His Excellency Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, Minister of Education and Chairman of the Higher Education Council, also examined the comparative performance of students with the Bahrain Tawjihiya qualification and other international high school qualifications.  This analysis confirmed that Bahrain Tawjihiya students with English language proficiency of IELTS ≥6.5 are just as likely to achieve honours in the degree as students who enter the medicine programme with A-Level and International Baccalaureate qualifications.

During a meeting last week with His Excellency Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain said, “We are very happy to see that students from the Bahrain government schools are among the top performing students in our medicine programme. Several of these students achieved the highest overall GPA during the degree programmes and were awarded the honour of being our valedictorian speech graduates. Their high level of performance gives us confidence that we can continue to train excellent doctors and nurses that will strengthen the healthcare sector in Bahrain.”
