The Role of Employers and Employees in Supporting Menopause

Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery

Summary

Some women enjoy a wonderful journey during menopause, however, one in four women experience significant symptoms. Two in five women say that their symptoms were worse than they expected and eight in 10 women of menopausal age are experiencing menopause while working/in the workplace.

Common menopause symptoms can include hot flushes, brain fog, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, and lack of confidence, all of which can affect not only their workplace performance and relationships but also relationships with partners, family, and friends. Additionally, menopause can have serious impacts on cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal health, which can also contribute to employment challenges and difficulties.

This CPD aims to raise awareness, knowledge and understanding of menopause in workplace settings. This will help to inform a supportive environment for women as they go through this life stage, by promoting their overall wellbeing, inclusion and productivity. This will act as a platform for a wider conversation about menopause in the workplace.

The programme includes content of in-person lectures, group discussion, menopause support resource pack, providing information on menopause, peri-menopause and menopause symptoms, managing menopause, and organization supports and resources.

The programme is facilitated by Kathleen Kinsella, a Menopause Consultant and supported by Sibéal Carolan, Project Lead, Health and Wellbeing, HSE. The programme is accredited by RCSI's Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery.
