Entry requirements

A holistic review of the entire application will determine eligibility to the medicine progamme. Meeting the minimum academic entry requirements does not guarantee an offer for the programme.

Applications will be assessed on the following criteria:

  • Academic performance and English language
  • Relative experience in a healthcare setting (up to 3 examples)
  • Extracurricular activities, relevant work or voluntary experience
  • Performance at a structured interview
  • All applicants must have completed a minimum 12 years of schooling by the end of secondary school education.

Admissions to the medicine programme is a competitive process. Based on the strength of your total application, you may receive an offer for the 5-year or 6-year entry point.

The following requirements are the minimum academic standards for consideration into the Undergraduate Medicine Programme.

Requirements by Curriculum

Applicants who present GCE A-Levels without GCSEs must present evidence of completion of equivalent education level in another school system.

Applicants applying with AS-Levels must have exited school after AS-Levels and cannot have continued on to A-Level.

5 Year programme (Direct Entry)

  • Required Subjects: Three A-Level subjects. They must include Chemistry and at least one additional lab science (Biology or Physics). The third A-Level can be Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Psychology. You must also have a minimum six GCSEs or equivalent (including English and Maths).
  • Minimum Grade: A,B,B or A,A,C. You must also have a minimum C/4 in GCSE English and Maths.
  • English language requirements: Minimum Grade C/4 in GCSE English or an IELTS Academic minimum of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.
6 Year Programme (Foundation Year)
  • Required Subjects: Three A-Levels from the following; Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. You must also have a minimum six GCSEs or equivalent (including English and Maths). The following A-Level subjects are not accepted as a third subject for entry into the 6 year programme: General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills and Global Perspectives.
  • Minimum Grade: B,C,C. If you have three A Levels but only two of the required subjects (as shown above) you will need a minimum B,B,C or A,C,C (with one of the required subjects at minimum grade B). You must also have a minimum C/4 in GCSE English and Maths.
  • English language requirements: Minimum Grade C/4 in GCSE English or an IELTS Academic minimum of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.

5 Year Programme (Direct Entry)
  • Required Subjects: You need to study three AP subjects which must include Chemistry and Biology. The third Subject can be Calculus, Physics or Psychology. You must also achieve a competitive High School Diploma cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA).
  • Minimum Grade: You need a minimum score of 12 points (with no subject lower than 4).
  • English language requirements: An IELTS Academic minimum of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.
6 Year Programme (Foundation Year)
  • Required Subjects: You need to study three AP subjects from the following; Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Calculus. You must also achieve a competitive High School Diploma cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA).
  • Minimum Grade: You need a minimum score of 9 points (with no subject lower than 3). If you are missing one of the required subjects (as shown above), you will need a third AP and a minimum score of 10 points (with no subject lower than 3).
  • English language requirements: An IELTS Academic minimum of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.

6 Year Programme (Foundation Year)
  • Required Subjects: You should have competitive grades in science and mathematics subjects that you have completed in Grades 10,11 and 12. These may include: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra, Pre-calculus, Calculus and Statistics. You must also take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SATs).
  • Minimum Grade: You need a minimum Grade Point Average (cGPA) of 92% or 3.60 (calculated over Grades 10, 11 and 12) and SAT with minimum score of 500 from 800 in Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and 550 from 800 in Math, a total of 1050 from 1600.
  • English language requirements: An IELTS Academic minimum of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.

*Kuwaiti citizens presenting AHSD may submit the Kuwait National Aptitude Test results in place of SAT results.

5 Year Programme (Direct Entry)
  • Required Subjects: You need to study three of the following subjects at standard grade 12(XII); Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. You must also study Mathematics to at least standard grade 10 (X), and hold a bonafide certificate of completion issued by the CBSE or ISCE.
  • Minimum Grade: You need a minimum GPA of 90% in grade 12 XII (with a minimum 80% in each subject).
  • English language requirements: An IELTS Academic minimum of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.
6 Year Programme (Foundation Year)
  • Required Subjects: You need to study three of the following subjects at standard grade 12(XII); Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. You must also study Mathematics to at least standard grade 10 (X), and hold a bonafide certificate of completion issued by the CBSE or ISCE.
  • Minimum Grade: You need a minimum GPA of 80% (with a minimum 75% in each subject).
  • English language requirements: An IELTS Academic minimum of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.

5 Year Programme (Direct Entry)
  • Required Subjects: You need to study six subjects in total. Three Standard Level subjects (SL) and Three Higher Level (HL) subjects. Higher Level subjects must include Chemistry (minimum score of 5 points) and one of the following; Biology, Physics and Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation). However, IF Mathematics is presented at Higher Level, another science subject (as shown above) must be presented at Standard Level (SL). Subjects must also include English.
  • Minimum Grade: You need a minimum score of 35 IB Diploma points (inclusive of bonus points).
  • English language requirements: Minimum score 5 in SL (IB) English or an IELTS Academic minimum of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.
6 Year Programme (Foundation Year)
  • Required Subjects: You need to study six subjects in total. Three Standard Level subjects (SL) and three Higher Level (HL) subjects. Subjects must include English, Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation) and at least one laboratory science subject (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) at higher Level.
  • Minimum Grade: You need a minimum score of 30 IB Diploma points (inclusive of bonus points).
  • English language requirements: Minimum score 5 in SL (IB) English or an IELTS Academic minimum of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.

Candidates are also eligible for consideration based on presentation of a combination of subjects from different systems as outlined below:

5 Year Programme (Direct Entry)
  • Required Subjects: Across A-Levels, AP or IB, you need to study three subjects from the following; Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics/Calculus.
  • Minimum Grade: With one subject at an A-Level minimum grade of A, you must present two other subjects with a minimum grade of either B in A-Levels, 4 in AP or 5 in IB Higher Level. Without one subject at an A-Level minimum grade of A, you must present at least 1 subject with a minimum of 5 in AP or 6 in IB Higher Level. You must also present 2 other subjects with a minimum grade of B in the A-Levels, 4 in AP or 5 in IB Higher Level.
  • English language requirements: Minimum Grade C/4 in GCSE English or minimum score 5 in SL (IB) English or an IELTS Academic minimum of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.
6 Year Programme (Foundation Year)
  • Required Subjects: Across A-Levels, AP or IB, you need to study three subjects from the following; Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics/Calculus.
  • Minimum Grade: With one subject at an A-Level minimum grade of B, you must present two other subjects with a minimum grade of either C in A-Levels, 3 in AP or 4 in IB /Higher Level. Without 1 subject at an A-Level minimum grade of B, you must present at least one subject with a minimum of 4 in AP or 5 in IB Higher Level. You must also present two other subjects with a minimum grade of C in the A-Levels, 3 in AP or 4 in IB Higher Level. SABIS - Choueifat candidates who achieve a cGPA of 90% or above in the final 3 years of their Choueifat High School diploma and SAT with minimum score of 500 from 800 in Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and 550 from 800 in Math, a total of 1050 from 1600 are eligible for entry to the 6 year programme.
  • English language requirements: Minimum Grade C/4 in GCSE English or minimum score 5 in SL (IB) English or an IELTS Academic minimum of 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 in any band) or TOEFL equivalent.

Applicants who have a minimum of 12 years of school education and complete one of the following Foundation Programmes may be considered for the 5 Year or 6 Year Programmes.

5 year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 80%, to include 75% in Chemistry and no other individual module score less than 70%.

6 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 70%, to include 70% in Chemistry and no other individual module score less than 60%.

Bath Academy International Medical Foundation Programme

5 year Programme

Applicants must complete three major modules, with a minimum grade of A in Chemistry, minimum grade of B in Biology and a minimum grade of B in the optional major module.

6 Year Programme

Applicants must complete three major modules with a minimum grade of B in each module.

CATS Global Schools University Foundation Programme (UFP)

5 Year programme

Applicants just present a minimum of three subjects with minimum grades of AAB, to include Chemistry, one additional laboratory science subject (Biology or Physics) plus one other from the following: Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Psychology.

6 Year Programme

Applicants must present a minimum of three subjects with minimum grades of AAB, to include at least one subject from the following: Biology, Chemistry or Physics.

5 Year Programme

Applicants must complete three major modules, with a minimum grade of A in Chemistry, minimum grade of B in Biology and a minimum grade of B in the optional major module.

6 Year Programme

Applicants must complete three major modules with a minimum grade of B in each module.

5 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 80%, to include 75% in Chemistry and no other individual module score less than 70%.

5 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 70% across three modules, with no individual module score less than 65%.

6 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 65% across the three modules, with no individual module score less than 60%.

UCLAN On Campus Life Sciences University Programme

6 Year Programme

Minimum overall average score of 70% across the three modules, with no individual module score less than 65%.

University of St Andrew’s International Foundation Programme for Medicine

5 Year Programme

Overall average score of 14 across all modules with no individual module score lower than 13 including Inorganic and Physical Chemistry and Organic and Biological Chemistry 1.

Applicants whose first language is not English or who have not been educated solely in a native English speaking country must satisfy an English language proficiency requirement through the following means:

Applicants who have been solely educated through an English language curriculum in a native English speaking country and / or those who have completed the following curricula meet the English Language Requirement for entry into the 5 or 6 Year Programmes.

IB Diploma Minimum score of 5 in Standard or Higher Level English.
(I)GCSE/GCE Minimum score of Grade C or 4 in English.
Irish Leaving Certificate Minimum score of Grade O6 in English.
Hong Kong DSE Minimum of Level 5 in English.

5 Year Programme

Applicants who have completed a full Bachelor's Degree in a science or health professions field with a competitive GPA will be considered for admission. Candidates who present a Bachelor’s Degree in another discipline with post bachelor courses in science and test scores for MCAT or GAMSAT will be considered on a case by case basis.

Please note:

The completed Bachelor’s Degree should be from a university programme which has entry requirements that are equivalent to an A level or International Baccalaureate qualification according to UK ENIC equivalency guidelines.

All applicants presenting a Bachelor’s Degree must also have completed at least 12 years of schooling by the end of secondary school education.
