Faculty of Radiologists and Radiation Oncologists

The Faculty of Radiologists and Radiation Oncologists is the professional and academic body for radiologists and radiation oncologists in Ireland.

The Faculty was established by Irish radiologists in 1961 to advance the science, art and practice of radiology and its allied sciences and to promote education, study and research in radiology.

One of the Faculty's key roles is in the provision of postgraduate training in diagnostic radiology and radiation oncology. The training involves over 100 specialist registrars throughout 11 diagnostic centres and three radiation oncology centres in Ireland. Both training programmes are spread over five years, with the exam for the Fellowship for the Faculty taken initially in the fourth year. Once candidates pass the Fellowship exam and complete all five years of training, the are eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register of the Medical Council of Ireland, and are eligible to apply for permanent consultant posts in their specialty.

The Faculty also takes part in the International Medical Graduate Training Initiative (IMGTI). This initiative provides a possible route for overseas doctors wishing to undergo structured postgraduate medical training within the public health service in Ireland.

In addition to postgraduate training, the Faculty is formally recognised by the Irish Medical Council to administer a professional competence scheme (PCS) for radiology and radiation oncology, and also offers examinations in diagnostic radiology and radiation oncology.
