I’ve been a registered midwife for over 14 years, and currently work as a unit manager at a large hospital. But I wanted to expand my leadership abilities and make a broader impact on healthcare delivery. I knew that I needed to develop a deeper understanding of strategic leadership and how to apply it in a healthcare setting. This led me to pursue an MSc in Leadership and Innovation in Healthcare at RCSI.
I chose RCSI for its well-established reputation, and the programme offered the perfect blend of theory and practical application. I wanted to effectively manage teams, lead change, and enhance healthcare services.
The course allowed me to build on my experience in midwifery and management, and empowered me to lead with a broader, more strategic perspective. Change management, healthcare innovation and strategic leadership – all of which were highly relevant to my role – were covered.
What made the course truly valuable was its practical focus; everything I learned could be applied to real-world healthcare settings. The programme not only deepened my understanding of leadership theory but also equipped me with the tools to drive change and lead teams effectively.
For my project, I focused on empowering midwives by expanding their roles and giving them greater autonomy. Balancing my research with the practical demands of a busy hospital environment was a challenge, but with the support of the RCSI faculty and my own manager, I was given the flexibility to develop it. I successfully implemented these changes, and this had a direct impact on improving patient care, as well as job satisfaction among midwives.
The MSc has been a vital step in my career, providing me with the strategic mindset and practical tools necessary to lead at a higher level.
My goal is to continue using the leadership skills I developed through the programme to drive organisational change, influence healthcare policy, and improve the overall quality of patient care.
