Remco de Fouw
Remco de Fouw was awarded the inaugural 2016 RCSI Art Award for his work 'Random Access Memory V' at the 186th RHA Annual Exhibition.
His commission for RCSI is titled 'Atlas and Axis’. Drawing inspiration from the anatomy of the human body and made from Spanish alabaster and glass, it is a sculptural diptych depicting the two uppermost bones in the vertebral column. In human anatomy, the atlas and axis bones support the skull, facilitate movement of the head and neck, and protect the spinal cord. De Fouw's piece situates them as the transitional point at which matter and signal somehow become spirit or consciousness.
