Stephen Murphy

Stephen Murphy was awarded the 2023 RCSI Art Award for 'Newborn (The Hardest Day of Your Short Life Yet)' – a sculpture inspired by the premature birth of his son, PJ – at the 193rd RHA Annual Exhibition.

He will be invited to complete a commission for RCSI in 2025/26.

About the artist

Stephen Murphy is a Cork-born artist who lives and works in Limerick City. His practice spans drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture, and he has exhibited at venues nationally and internationally including the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Royal Academy and the British National Portrait Gallery. Alongside his art practice, he is also an educator who has been described as 'inspiring' by the UK ‘Good Schools Guide'.

Most recently, Murphy has lectured at the South Eastern Technological University Waterford, Limerick School of Art & Design at the Technological University of the Shannon, and Mary Immaculate College.

His work is held in private collections in Ireland and overseas in Europe, Australia, and the United States.
